>> picture taken on: december 5, 2004

>> event: first picture hunting in jakarta
>> place: cathedral church

for those who celebrate christmas, sLesTa.com would like to wish you a merry christmas. and to all, a happy holidays and happy new year of 2005. may the new year brings peace, happiness and luck.

as per the picture above, it is a picture of our own cathedral church, taken on my first photo hunting in jakarta early december. i edited it a bit with photoshop to create a christmas card.

2004 has been one of my memorable year so far. a lot has happened, more significantly is my decision to go back home for good. one hope i would be praising for the new year, though not necessarily very active in searching for it just yet, is to land myself a nice job.

have a good new year, ya'll!

[next: "happy holidays!"]

>> picture taken on: december 5, 2004
>> photographer: sLesTa
>> event: first picture hunting in jakarta
>> place: ya di depan tugu nya laahh...

as the titled said.. it is tugu tani (picture taken in color, converted to black & white to emphasize the sillhouette of the statute). although i'm not quite sure what this monument is actuallly named, we referred to it as tugu tani.. but then again maybe it is named as it's always being referred to. (eh bener kan ini tugu tani? kalo salah.. please correct me!)

nothing ordinary from the way it looks, really. but i wonder what kind of stories it carries. i'm sure those of you who live in jakarta has passed it several times.. and maybe never really noticed what the monument portrays and how it came about to be placed in the middle of the intersection. who are the woman and the man it portrays? does she have a name? we can only guess that the woman is a farmer giving the harvest to the man, whom i figured a soldier. maybe a gift of thanks for protecting the village.. but maybe, to bribe for protection? well, i'm just shooting out assumptions here. i'm not sure how the story behind the statute, and i'm dying to know what the real history is behind it.

sadly, i tried to find out more about it, but i can't seem to find anything on the net. maybe i'm looking at the wrong places. maybe anyone can help?

ah yess... this picture marks my official announcement that i am back in my homeland. i may not in the "city that never sleeps" anymore.. but sLesTa is still in the city. :)

after over a month back in my homeland, jakarta, i was finally able to walk around the "kota" and had my first hunting activity since i'm here. my target was the city's old station house (stasiun jakarta kota), museum of jakarta, then off to istiqlal mosque and the cathedral church. it was sunday morning and i was accompanied with my best friend who i trusted to show me the way how to get to these places. it was hot. but the weather was really nice.. i can actually see the blue sky for once.

took quite many pictures.. i'm glad i can capture some nice ones, though i am still producing the pictures. this one.. though not as nice as it should be.. i thought would be a good opening. you see that monument and you know.. it was taken in jakarta. and that's where i am now. others may follow.. so stay tune. i haven't really updated anything .. i know. it's just that.. going online is a luxury here, but it's gonna change soon. so, please pardon the delay, but i'll come back full force.. :)

>> picture taken on: october 29, 2004
>> photographer: sLesTa

>> place: my parents' house

every year, my parents always prepare the so-called "bingkisan" or a parcel to be given to the less-fortunate people. mom would list the names of people that she gathers from visiting them to kampung-kampung then she would invite them over to our house and give them gifts and a bit of money so they can spend their lebaran nicely. it's part of being a muslim.. to give away tidings (zakat) once a year, and what would be a better time than during the month of ramadhan?

the picture above is one of many "packages" that we personally bought, put together and wrapped before we gave them to the needy. and it was a really wonderful feeling to look at their faces when they receive it. we hope they can celebrate lebaran a little better this year. >> event: road trip
>> place: antelope canyon, AZ

another pic from the road trip. you may have seen it from the album, but i just want to highlight this picture cuz i really love this. it was taken inside the cave - a wind tunnel, to be exact .. a huge wind tunnel, that is -- in antelope canyon, arizona. the canyon is located inside the navajo tribe reservation area which is off-limits to public, except if you enter with a navajo tribe guide (btw, navajo reservation area is actually the largest native american reservation in the united states). according to them, this wind tunnel is a sacred place. inside there were huge stones crafted through years and years of wind and mudslides that went through the canyon. on top of the canyon, there were holes that let the sun comes in and creating a beautiful shades of light when it touches the red rock of the canyon. it was just a marvelous view when you come at the right time of the day.

paw and i went to this place after we saw the ad in one of the visitor's center. we knew we just had to stop by. it was heaven for photographers who tried to take pictures. too bad we didn't take the photographer's tour, so we didn't have enough time to actually take pictures with the right equipment. this is one of the best ones i can get, and it was hand-held. as i'm counting the days, i've been walking around the city to take pictures of the places i surely will miss. and it's always nice to hangout at the rockefeller center where they usually put up a different exhibition every week.

this week.. it's jonathan borofsky's "walking to the sky" exhibition where they put up a giant pole with life-size statues of people on top of the pole as if they are walking towards the sky. i tried to capture the pole next to the buildings around the plaza. unfortunately, the sun shines so bright that day that i can only get the sillhouette of the pole among the skylines. either way, i'm pretty satisfied how it came out. what do you think?

here's what i got for you from my recent road trip across the country with a good friend of mine, paw. well, not exactly across the country cuz it starts in las vegas, nv and ends in new orleans, la. along the way we stopped in at least 12 points of interest, including hoover dam (nevada-arizona), grand canyon (arizona), red rock canyon - sedona (arizona), antelope canyon (arizona), monument valley (utah), arches national park (utah), rockies (colorado), valley of fires (new mexico), white sands (new mexico), el paso (texas), the alamo - san antonio (texas), houston (texas), new orleans (louisiana).

the trip was just magnificently grand. i was so in awe with the view i saw, the great creation of the higher being that makes you small. and it was definitely the most remembered trip i've ever had.. i just wish it never ends.

the above picture is taken along the route 163 in utah in view of the long road from the monument valley, as we continue our way to arches national park, driving 4 hours north from monument valley. we stopped as we saw the silhouette of the monument valley and the straight line of the route we have passed by. magnificent!

in remembering the tragedy of 9/11, new york city gave a tribute by having two blue lights up in ground zero, where the twin towers once stood. the lights were on from dusk till dawn that day, and i had a chance to take still images of the view along the manhattan skyline and next to brooklyn bridge from dumbo (down under manhattan bridge overpass), brooklyn. another spot was taken from where the lights were energized, near the parking lot in the battery park city. an amazing view alright.. i'm glad i was able to capture it this time. the picture above was the one i took when we took during one of our stops along the ocean drive. this looks like some painting but it's real, yo! i love how the clouds stay on top like that, gives a dramatic look on the entire picture. (taken by nikon d70)

i know i know.. i haven't updated anything on this site for.. ever!? hehe.. and i know i've been posting a lot of "gebyar" stuff. the story, the promo, and the likes. so bear with me, cuz there's one more stuff that's missing. the pictures! i have to warn you, there are tons of pictures!! so if you're not using a high-speed connection, better watch out cuz you might experience a slower time to download them. and it's not even complete yet! i'm still in the process of pick and choose some pictures from the photographers of the event.

the above picture is one of the pictures i like most. there are too many good pictures and the reason i'm putting the picture above is because i love how ethnic it looks. you'll know it right away, it's from bali! it's one of the dancers of the event who was performing "kebyar duduk" dance. the costume, the dance, and the makeup is just marvelous. and the expression adds the whole ethnicity to it too. rich in color just as rich as our culture is. very very "gebyar"!! :)

i'm sure you all know what guggenheim museum is. and most of you, i'm sure, know how it looks like. frank lloyd wright has put his signature on the buildings he created, and guggenheim has his, it's the spiral walkaway. but most of the time, you only know how it looks like from outside. as for me, eventhough i've lived here for quite some time now, i never actually set foot inside the museum. i passed it by all the time, but i never got a chance (well, never make the chance, to be exact) to go inside. during the "museum mile on fifth", early this month, fifth avenue was closed and all museums along fifth ave. was free to enter. i chose "guggenheim" for the above reason. although some part of the museum was on construction, the photography gallery was awesome. too bad, we were not allowed to take pictures inside, only from the lobby, at the bottom of the spiral. but i took this one from the top floor (where the guard barked at me after i took it). err.. yeah, i did snap some on the arts too while the guard wasn't looking .. but sshhhh.. don't tell anyone!

had lunch date with loucee this afternoon. as usual, we met in front of the manhattan mall and had lunch at the food court. the last time we went there, we spotted this photobox machine near the escalator. while photobox is probably a common scene around malls in jakarta, it's not so much here. it's quite hard to find a photobox booth that can take a nice picture. so this time, we stopped and had our pictures taken. how much does it cost? 3 bux!!! mahal aje.. but hey look! it came out pretty nice, didn't it? different from the one we used to back home, there is no sound of a girl telling us to get ready and take the position. all we see was this blinking light and then the flash went off. most of the time (at least the first two pics) we weren't ready. the only time we finally posed was when we made our "ugly" face at the end of the shot. what a way to spend my lunch date.. biasanya cuman duduk di meja nongkrongin komputer sambil sesekali di buzz ama boss yang mengganggu makan siangku. uuhh!! louuuu... lunch lagi yoookkk!!!

a nice shot taken by adis when we were inside the gondola that took us to the top of the gore mountain. it was so freakin' cold that day, we couldn't feel our face and our snot becomes icycle as we went on top. this is the picture of my brother, den, with his snowboarding attire and a scarf covering his face with the trail in the background. it was a fun day despite of the cold, cuz as we went down, we focused more into balancing our snowboard on the snow to keep us from falling on our arses.. we just forgot about the cold..

>> event: out in soho on saturday afternoon to take some snaps of the city
>> place: west broadway & grand st. - soho

one saturday afternoon, me & loucee took a stroll around soho to take some snapshots around the area. the sun was bright and we took some nice pictures. but i love this picture of loucee on action taking the picture of the "grand theft auto" posters on street. we both took some candid of each other while we're taking pictures. there's another picture in which loucee took of me when i was taking a picture of an object. you can see it here. just another saturday afternoon activity in such a nice weather (a bit cold, though) in soho. what do you think of them?

>> "NEW YEAR'S EVE @ TIMES SQUARE" | JANUARY 2004 - WEEK 1

[previous: "the best hot dog in nyc"]

>> event: new year's eve at times square
>> place: 49th street & broaday

this is not the best picture i took but it's one of the clearest of our attempt to spend new year's eve in times square... only to last less than 2 hours. the mix of tight security and cold weather (although not as cold as the previous years) we decided to abandon the idea and go to the warmer place to spend our new year's eve.
