>> PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2: DEAD MAN'S CHEST (2006)

Starring: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and more ...
Director: Gore Verbinski
Genre: Action/Adventure

I Liked It

i do believe that if it weren't because of johnny depp in his quirky, flamboyant performance as capt. jack sparrow, pirates of the caribbean: dead man's chest would be just another sequel -- bigger, splashier, costlier.. not to mention, longer, but not necessarily better.

the story focus on sparrow's unpaid debt to davy jones, played by bill nighy who does a fine job under the special effects as supernatural villain. even with the heavy makeover and effects, i can still feel the essence of the bill nighy's signature performance and movements. anyways, davy jones appears in ghostly form, along with a scary-looking crew of seafaring phantoms whose faces are fused with barnacles, coral, starfish and other sea creatures.

it all starts when will turner and his bride-to-be elizabeth swann were charged for death by nefarious east india trading co. rep lord beckett. to be freed from the death charge, turner then forced to track down captain jack sparrow, who sets sail on the black pearl in an attempt to wrest control of the chest from davy jones. jack believed that by getting into the chest, that contains jones' heart, he would then be able to free himself from jones' curse & debts. however, while jones' ask for sparrow's unpaid debt, sparrow tries to locate the chest by using his unreliable compass, which happen to be the item that lord becket wants in order to free turner and swann.

it was a complicated pursuit of the same stuff and to be honest, i was confused by the middle of it. tried so hard to keep myself entertained, but when the movie comes to an end without any particular conclusion to all the problems laid out, i was a bit disappointed, but mostly relieved that i can go home and head to bed.

dead man's chest puts the viewer into a bland stupor, willing to be entertained, and maybe believe that the audiences will be, up to a point, by the beautiful actors, sumptuous production values and the stray desires the film may stimulate to go to amusement parks or rides in disneyland, or even some cash-making shows in las vegas. but other than that, i find this movie quite disppointing... especially that i actually take my recent travel time in bangkok to actually go to the theater and purchase the tickets so i won't miss it when i went back home.
