Just OK!

Underworld (2003) set in a future world that has seen generations of battles between vampires and werewolves, this sci-fi-action-romance centers on the powerful, nocturnal fighter selene (kate beckinsale). she is a deadly vampire warrior at the top of her game. her one flaw is that she dares to care for a human being (scott speedman) whose existence is very important to the werewolves. in his blood, he carries the key that can save their race from extinction. so begins a race to claim his life in this futuristic actioner loosely inspired by william shakespeare's romeo and juliet.

but how could you go wrong with "romeo & juliet" between vampires and werewolves, and kate beckinsale kicking butt in skintight black latex? well, this one managed to. first, a couple of good things: the backstory is actually intriguing, and there are hints of some real thoughts about governing an immortal society, and ethnic cleansing. so, what's wrong? this movie could have been shot in B&W and it wouldn't have looked much different (it might actually have been sharper). there is almost none of the suggested romance, and no sexiness to speak of although kate beckinsale looks great, but her actions give her all the sex appeal of a machine. the events of the story are too stop-and-start, and start potential plot threads only to leave them dangling.

from always, i always have a hard time liking this type of movie, although i admit there are movies about vampires out there that turned out great *you know which one!* but since i saw the trailer, i knew this could be cheesy. well, i was somewhat right. as i said.. the background story is really good. but i think the maker should focus on making this movie right first before even thinking of the sequel. you can tell that the sequel will come out.. and the ending was great, except that there's no uumph throughout the entire movie. although i like both actors *beckinsale and speedman* and i thought both of them are just astonishingly good looking.. they just don't have good chemistry. it was just disappointing, even lucas agrees. all i can say.. it's better of to wait till this movie comes out on dvd *or even on cable*.. truly not worth your 10 bux!
