which one would you rather be.. a small fish in a big pond? or a big fish in a small pond?
since the beginning of my career, this question has been haunting me. i keep thinking of which "fish" would i be? my dilemma was that i would rather be a small fish in a big pond but i want to be a noticed small fish. cuz swimming among other small fish in a big pond means you have to stand up to be noticed and you have to be very competitive in order to do that. i know i am a competitive person, but at the same time.. being a small fish in a big pond is a hard work.
being a big fish in a small pond, however, means you're already make a significant impact in your pond. however, your pond is too small to understand that your accomplishment may not be a big deal once you swim in a big pond.
it is a dilemma, alright. but i think it's better to be a small fish in a big pond. cuz after a while.. you'll grow and become big. and the big pond may not look so big to you anymore. but in order to get there.. it takes time and energy to survive. and that is life, my friend.
something to think about...

>> MOBILE PHONES
remember an old "american express" commercial which says "you can't leave home without it!" ? well, these days, you can always leave your amex home anytime, but it's your mobile phones that you can't leave home without.
with the new advances of technology, things that we wouldn't think of 10 years ago, is already a common thing around us. everyone carries a mobile phone. kids to adults, they have one, sometimes more than one. it's like we're cursed to have one, otherwise, the society will look us differently when told we don't have a mobile phone.
aside for it's high needs in the business world, as a way of communication.. what else does it provide us? why would an elementary kid has a mobile? what's the purpose? you'd answer, so that the parents can tell where the kid is and can check out on him/her anytime. but.. why? shouldn't the parents know what the kid is doing anytime.. i mean, my parents didn't use to have a mobile phone when i was young.. and they knew exactly what i was doing and where, at any given time.
okay.. maybe that example was to the extreme.. since it's not that common, really, for an elementary kid to have a mobile phone.. but you'll be surprised and how many of them do actually. how about an example for setting up a date with friends? we used to be able to meet up and agree on a meeting point without having to carry a mobile phone to ask where the others are. these days.. we'll set a meeting point, but there are always someone who got lost along the way. and for that, thank God for mobile phone! but why do we become so dependent on it?
well.. i know i sound to be so naive talking about this. i mean, i do carry a mobile phone since 8 years ago, and i always have them with me anywhere. i never leave home without it cuz it's already a customary to carry them around anywhere. but if i were to say to leave my phone at home or to turn it off for 24 hours, would i be able to? i think i can. i don't really dependent on my phone 100%. in fact, i don't find myself talking on the mobile phone or texting people regularly. but i do carry them around, just in case.. or for the information i would need in it. other than that.. i can continue with my life. although i never turn it off ever... but does it mean that i'm really depending on it?
i firmly think i don't. it's more of the social pressure. from work, perhaps, since my workplace gives me a flexibility in the working hours, so when i decided to jump on the elevator to get a cup of coffee from the building next door, or when i decided to come in a little late from lunch, i make sure i carry my mobile phone with me, just in case, my boss comes looking for me for an urgent information. if i were to ask whether i'm more dependent on my mobile phone than internet.. i think i'd go for internet. that.. i can't live without. phones.. i can live without.. cuz it'd be nice to not be bothered by the rings every once in a while (not that it rings all the time.. actually!).
i guess for those who knows me... this explains why i don't call or text as often. i just don't like doing it, unless i have to. it also explains why i haven't changed my mobile phones for a while. for me, it's just merely a phone. where i make calls, get calls, and sms. it doesn't replace my camera or handycam. although i do admit, phones are convenient to keep in touch with those you live far away from. convenient, but not mandatory, perhaps? i'm sure many of you disagree with me. i know many people who cannot go through their day without phones. but hey, we have different purpose with it..
